Why I Put More Focus Into Writing for Medium than I Do for My Own Blog

Sometimes, writing for my own blog can be discouraging…

I love writing. No doubt about it.

But the thrill of writing comes not just from the writing itself, nope. Writing for me is a somewhat self-centered endeavor, because it’s the feedback that I get from my writing that I most enjoy.

I know. Selfish.

But there it is.

I started my first blog back in 2003. Back then I had no idea that other people could respond to what I wrote. Or even that anyone would find it. I was writing simply because I had some stuff going on in my life, and the blog served as a place to do a daily ‘brain dump’. It was my digital journal. I wasn’t really thinking about the fact that other people could read what I was putting out there.

Let’s face it; writers don’t write for themselves. We write with the intention of helping others in some way. If I write about something that I’m going through, and that writing helps someone else feel like they’re not alone in their own situation, I’m good with that.

But when we create a standalone blog, it’s all up to us to get that writing noticed. I’ve started more than one blog in the last ten years. No matter what the topic or niche, getting that blog noticed…
